El Puente CADRE Honor Exhibit

CADRE (Community Artists’ Development & Resource Exchange/Colectiva para Recursos y Desarollo de Artistas Comunitarios) is El Puente's network of mostly Latino community artists, artisans and cultural workers rooted in North Brooklyn. Members exchange ideas and share resources; develop and present individual and collaborative work; and design and implement strategies for community sustainability. CADRE is coordinated by El Puente's Green Light District (GLD) Initiative - a holistic ten-year sustainability campaign for the Southside of Williamsburg (Los Sures). CADRE members have collectively produced art exhibitions, community murals, workshops with visiting artists, the annual ¡WEPA! Festival for Southside Performing Arts, Integrated Arts Projects, and more. A collective of CADRE's visual artists, Los Muralistas de El Puente, continues a two-decade long history of collaborating with young people to design and paint socially engaging community murals in Los Sures (South Williamsburg) and Bushwick, Brooklyn.

Through the ¡WEPA! Project, CADRE has and continues to identify new and non-traditional places and spaces for sharing, teaching, and presenting the diverse art forms alive in the Southside; help creative businesses utilize and activate these spaces, which include church basements, underutilized commercial storerooms, vacant storefronts, rooftops, pocket parks, and plazas in need of renovation; and produce work ranging from traditional Latino visual and performing arts, such Bomba y Plena and parrandas that do not have a place elsewhere in the community.
In July 2015, El Puente announced the launch of the CADRE Incubated Project. Through a formal application process, CADRE members were invited to propose projects that engage the Southside and CADRE communities. The selected artists will receive a $500 stipend, project support and promotion, free access to rehearsal and/or performance space, and will be paired with a mentor who will help guide them through their creative process. With support from the National Endowment for the Arts, a panel of artists was able to select two CADRE artists whose projects will be incubated at El Puente from December 2015 - November 2016. Congratulations to Melinda González and Yowalka Rosario! Check back soon for updates on both projects.
